This tea is from the Anhui province, specifically from Qi Men where the name derives. The alternative names are Keemun are Qimen, Qui Men, Qi Men, Hong Cha and Congou, This tea is considered to have no match and is widely regarded as one of the most fragrant black teas.
The tightly curled black leaves create a reddish infusion, which is the reason it is often referred to as a "red tea" in China. It has a unique and intriguing flavour, with a slight fruity and floral fragrance and a hint of toasty pine.
Keemun tea is relatively new as it was first produced in 1875 in China. After being dismissed as a civil servant, Yu Quianchen traveled to Anhui to learn more about the production of black tea. It was here that he produced Keemun tea, which, as well as being prized as a pure tea, is also used today in very high quality English breakfast teas (like in our own Breakfast Blend No1). Therefore, it is a good beginner tea for anyone new to pure Chinese teas.
This tea is also know as, “the queen of fragrance” in China.
