A tisane is a caffeine free infusion that is not made from Camellia Sinensis (the tea plant) although they will often use the word ‘tea’ in their name. Tisanes can be made from bark, flowers, fruits, herbs, leaves, spices or roots. Popular tisanes include peppermint, camomile, ginger, echinacea, chrysanthemum and goji teas. They are commonly used for medicinal purposes such as drinking echinacea tea to prevent a cold or peppermint tea to aid digestion, however many people drink tisanes purely as they enjoy the taste. Part of their popularity stems from the fact that they are caffeine free.
A tisane is made similarly to making a cup of tea. Boiling water is poured over the infusion and left to steep depending on the desired strength of the drink.
