Selling tea can be a minefield and I can imagine that as a deli or café you might be tempted to just stick with the same old teabags everyone else is using. But here is why you shouldn’t, here is why going the extra mile makes a huge difference.
Amy and Hans (the couple behind LuLin Teas) used to run La Place Verte a Belgian Coffee House situated in the centre of York, UK. They sold run of the mill teabags but were getting a bit fed up that they weren’t making more of a splash (after all York is full of cafes so if you want to stand out you need to be special!)
Fast forward a few months and they had introduced Chinese teas to their coffee house including the wonderful Blooming Teas. Now, when someone who doesn’t quite know what to expect orders a blooming tea you would be amazed at their reaction when the ball opens and a beautiful bouquet of flowers emerges.
And what do you think happens when they go home? Instead of telling their family and friends about their average, normal trip to a café they will regale them with a tale about the most wonderful and unusual afternoon tea experience they had. It’s the same with anything – give someone a “normal” experience and how many people do you think they tell? But go that extra mile, give them something great that they weren’t expecting and you can almost guarantee yourself extra business.
It doesn’t have to be from using blooming tea, any loose leaf tea can be a rare sight in cafes and tearooms. Even just a little fact about the pot of tea you have presented your customer with (“did you know that our Jasmine Dragon Pearls use real jasmine flowers picked in Fujian during July and August?”) will make a huge difference to their experience and certainly make it one they will tell their friends about.
